How IonDrops works
IonDrops does two jobs in one housing: it filters what your pipes deliver, then reshapes the flow so the spray feels stronger on less water. Here is each stage, what it changes, and what it cannot change.

Stage 1 — stainless mesh screen
The first thing water meets is a fine stainless steel mesh. It catches the coarse material that older plumbing sheds: rust flakes, grit, pipe scale and sand. Screening these out first protects the cartridge behind it, which is why the cartridge lasts weeks rather than days.
Because the screen sits ahead of the nozzles, debris never reaches the outlet — the reason an unfiltered head slowly clogs and loses pressure while a filtered head stays consistent.
Stage 2 — mineral filter cartridge
Water then passes through a replaceable cartridge packed with filter media. This stage reduces fine sediment and the chlorine taste and odour that make shower steam smell like a swimming pool. Because the media is consumable, the cartridge visibly darkens as it loads up with what it removed — a fresh one is pale, and after roughly four weeks of daily showers it is noticeably grey or orange depending on your water.
Cartridges are sold in 2-packs at $14.99 and can be added to your first order at checkout so you are not waiting on a second delivery.

Stage 3 — high-pressure nozzle plate
Filtered water is finally pushed through a plate with narrowed laser-cut nozzles. Reducing the outlet area raises exit velocity, so the spray hits harder and feels stronger even though total flow is lower. In practice this is why IonDrops works well in flats and older homes where pressure is the main complaint, and why households usually see up to about 30% less water used per shower — which also means less energy spent heating it.

Why it feels stronger on less water
Felt pressure is about velocity, not litres. If you keep supply pressure the same and shrink the exit area, water leaves faster and each droplet carries more energy to your skin. That is the whole trick, and it is also why the effect fades if you leave a loaded cartridge in place: restricted media lowers the pressure reaching the plate.
| What changes | Direction |
|---|---|
| Exit velocity (felt pressure) | Up |
| Total water used per shower | Down, up to about 30% |
| Energy used heating that water | Down in proportion to volume |
| Sediment and rust reaching your skin | Down |
| Scale building inside the head | Prevented |
Three spray modes
- Rainfall — wide, even coverage for everyday showers.
- Jet — concentrated stream for rinsing long hair or shampoo quickly.
- Massage — pulsing pattern aimed at shoulders and neck.
Twist the collar to change modes; there is nothing to unscrew or reassemble.
Installing it in about 60 seconds
- Remove the old head. Turn the water off and unscrew your existing shower head by hand, using a cloth for grip if it is tight.
- Check the washer. Check the rubber washer is seated inside the IonDrops nut before fitting.
- Fit IonDrops. Screw IonDrops onto the same standard 1/2-inch shower arm and hand-tighten only — no tools.
- Flush the cartridge. Run the shower for 20–30 seconds to flush the new cartridge, then use as normal.
No tools, no plumber, and nothing permanent — renters can take it with them and refit the original head on move-out. Full walkthrough with leak fixes: how to install Ion Drops.
What to expect, week by week
| Timeframe | What you notice |
|---|---|
| First shower | Different spray feel and pressure; possible brief cloudiness while flushing |
| First week | Less chlorine smell in hot steam; nozzles stay clear |
| Weeks 2–4 | Skin and hair feedback; visible discolouration starting on the cartridge |
| Around week 4 | Time to swap the cartridge; flow returns to day-one feel |
What IonDrops does not do
Being straight about limits matters. IonDrops is a shower filtration and flow accessory. It is not a drinking-water purifier, it does not soften water by ion exchange the way a whole-home softener does, and it is not a medical device — it makes no health or medical claims. What it reliably changes is sediment, rust, chlorine taste and odour, scale build-up on the head itself, and how the spray feels.

Frequently asked questions
How does IonDrops increase water pressure?
Filtered water exits through a plate with narrowed laser-cut nozzles. Reducing the outlet area raises exit velocity, so the spray hits harder even though total flow is lower — which is also why households typically use up to 30% less water.
What are the three filtration stages?
A stainless steel mesh screen catches rust, grit and pipe scale; a replaceable mineral cartridge reduces fine sediment and chlorine taste and odour; and the nozzle plate accelerates the filtered water into the spray pattern.
How do I know the filter is actually doing something?
Pull the cartridge after a few weeks. A fresh one is pale; a loaded one is grey, brown or orange depending on your water. That inspection is the honest test, and it is why we use a replaceable cartridge rather than sealed mineral beads.
Does IonDrops work with a low-pressure or gravity-fed system?
It is designed for exactly that situation — the narrowed outlet is what makes a weak supply feel stronger. It cannot create pressure that is not there, so a system with a very low static head will improve but stay modest.
Do I need a plumber to fit it?
No. It hand-tightens onto a standard 1/2-inch threaded shower arm with the washer supplied. There is no drilling and nothing permanent, so renters can refit the original head when they move.
